“Roy is one of the legends of the Labour party and was a loyal and effective deputy to Neil Kinnock. He served as a senior minister in both the Wilson and Callaghan governments and although he was an MP in Birmingham for 33 years, he never lost his Yorkshire roots. The great theme of his political life and extensive writing has been equality of opportunity – an idea which will certainly be of relevance in the 2015 election.”

Jon Trickett is Deputy Chair of the Labour Party and has represented Hemsworth in West Yorkshire as MP since 1996.
